Start with one 18 year white male doing the rounds of Sydney pub bands in the late 1970s. Wait 27 years.
Add iPod and iTunes. Take the resulting 5000+ songs and a glass of gin. Try to list your best of best music.
Make arbitrary decisions about what is "great" and "best". When unsure, pour another glass. Repeat until unconscious.

Oh sure. Just 8-10 hours ago, I'm sitting in a music appreciation meeting with a few of my friends. I didn't bring much of anything to the party, because I'm fairly music-illiterate. Now you come out with the list of things I could have brought on your behalf.
BTW, we watched most of Pink Floyd Live in Pompeii. That thing is still fantastic 36 years later.
