Finally sorted my home page.

It's taken me years to work it out but home pages aren't wikis or blogs or CMS or fotologs.

  • Home pages are portals and window displays (a.k.a. sale pitches).
  • Blogs are write-once short streams blurts of textual entities.
  • Wikis are read/write buckets to hold (short) consensual textual opinions about stuff. But don't try to offer a rich/long structure within one Wiki entry.
  • CMS are for highly structured entities.
  • Photologs (like Flickr) excel at clever thumbnail generation and display.
Fotologs don't support sequenced speeches about the pics. Blogs don't support rewrites to old speeches. Wikis don't support long speeches about one topic. CMSs make you speak too slowly.

Anyway, I'm re-organizing my webiness and step one was to create the home page portal. That's done (see http://menzies.us) so step two is to create my kind of CMS that can handle large entries that are loosely structured. Hmmm.... watch this space.
